IBM Rational System Architect for DoDAF with Add On (ABM)

ABM is an activity-based, architecture framework methodology created by The MITRE Corporation for modeling DoDAF.

The Activity-based Methodology's approach to architecture development enables:

  • Core architecture data to be formed into Information Exchanges and System Data Exchanges
  • Information Exchanges and System Data Exchanges to generate Operational and Systems Views
  • Data consistency in resultant Operational and Systems Products
  • Quality enterprise architecture and analysis products (by eliminating user inputs) that speeds up the entire enterprise architecture development process.

IBM® Rational® System Architect®'s support for ABM includes all necessary modeling artifacts and automation for certain aspects of ABM to accelerate and help simplify the implementation of DoDAF.

Automation of Operational Views (OV)

IBM® Rational® System Architect® for DoDAF with ABM Add On support provides the following automated features for Operational Views:

  • Matrices that enable you to specify Operational Nodes that Operational Activities are performed on, and the role(s) that perform the activity on that node
  • Automatic generation of a hierarchy of OV-5 Activity models from an OV-5 Node Tree diagram
  • Automatic generation of Information Exchange Requirements
  • Automatic generation and maintenance of Need Lines on OV-2 diagrams
  • A Need Line Navigator that enables you to navigate operational nodes and view information exchanges and neighboring nodes
  • Automatic generation of OV-3 Operational Information Exchange matrices.

Automation of System Views (SV)

Rational System Architect's ABM support provides the following automated features for System Views:

  • Automatic Generation of a hierarchy of SV-4 Data Flow diagrams from an SV-4 Functional Decomposition diagram
  • Matrices that enable you to build traceability between System Functions, System Nodes, and System Entities
  • A System Function to Operational Activity Matrix provides a link between the operational and systems views
  • Automatic generation of System Data Exchange, System Node Interface, and System Interface Line definitions
  • Automatic rendering of SV-1 Systems Interface Diagrams to Analyze System Data Exchanges. Telelogic System Architect maintains information in the repository about each artifact and its relationship with others
  • A System Interface Line Navigator that enables you to view system entities, the system nodes that they are connected to, and the System Data Exchanges
  • Autogeneration of SV3, the Systems to Systems Matrix workproduct
  • Autogeneration of the SV-6 Systems Data Exchange Matrix.
